| Haili's Hawaiian Foods is older than statehood and synonymous with onolicious luau fare. Opened in the 1950's at the Ward Farmer's Market, Haili's has served up poi, poke, chicken long rice, lomi salmon and a long list of Hawai'i's favorites for three generations. In Mother Rachel Ching Haili's day, poi was "one dollah" for three bags, and "35 cents one laulau."Today, her namesake daughter Rachel heads the family operation that still offers Hawai'i's favorites, made fresh, for great prices. Recipes have been handed down, and are rarely shared -- it's a tradition Mrs. Haili started, and the precise makings of her delicious fare are secret to this day. The family of sisters who are responsible for maintaining the reputation, energy and great Hawaiian food each have specialties, but all agree they learned "all things Hawaiian" from dad Peter Davis Haili, and business savvy from their Chinese mom.For siblings who have cooked since they were kids, serving "countless mounds of succulent poke, acres of steaming laulau and barrels of day old poi" is a way of life. After more than fifty years at Ward Farmer's Market, the Haili family is taking on a new venture, moving across the street to open a lunch truck cafe. They will continue their well known catering business and are looking to a bright future... making Hawai'i's favorite Hawaiian food more accessible to all who crave it. |
